Lego Project
The success of the LEGO/DUPLO Playbox project continues to gain momentum.
The success of the project continues in Kleinmond with the newest addition of Kidscan. Kidscan is an aftercare facility, providing a safe place for children to go to after attending school. There are two separate venues, one for the younger children and one for the older learners. The learners are given a hearty meal on arrival, after which they are assisted with their homework. There is always time set aside for play activities.
There are three educators who will be receiving training at ORT.SA.CAPE. in August 2024. They will attend a morning of training after which they will each receive a large box of DUPLO or LEGO to take away for use with their learners
Due to the success of the project in our Ward, we ventured further afield to Grabouw and Elgin. Fiona, an Outreach trustee, and Veronica, a Rooiels resident and veteran in the education space were met with great enthusiasm at these venues.
In Elgin we approached De Rust Futura Academy.
It was an inspiration to walk through the school and see how the school has grown into a fully integrated facility. From small beginnings, De Rust Academy is a proud testament of what is possible when collective minds are brought together.
The early childhood development educators are extremely excited to be considered for the program. There will be three ECD educators going for training in September. A fun morning of learning will inspire them to take the lessons learned back to their learners.
We travelled further to Grabouw where we delighted to meet with the educators and learners from the Thembani Foundation.
We arrived during rest time, following mealtime. The learners were resting quietly on their sleep mats, and it was comforting to see how quiet and relaxed they were. The learners had completed a full morning of learning, which included colouring, cutting out shapes and identifying various learning patterns. It is noticeably clear to see how the DUPLO program is going to add immense value to the morning program.
There will be three educators attending training in Cape Town in August. In addition to the training, they will receive their share of DUPLO blocks to facilitate the classroom teaching.
