One of the projects of the Rooiels Trust is the ‘Lego project’ and to date 5 pre-primary schools in the Overstrand area are enrolled. This involves the teachers/caregivers obtaining specific training on how to use Lego to promote early childhood development goals through play in the classroom. Training provided by ORT SA CAPE, an NGO providing training and support to teachers in the Western Cape.
Karen Chambers (a specialist Educator from Care for Education) kindly offered to provide follow up training to the Teachers and this was held at Siyabulela Pre-Primary in Kleinmond. 17 teachers attended and the session was incredibly inspiring.
Over the 3 hour session, all the participants engaged in many different exercises on how Lego can be used to advance specific early learning goals. This includes numeracy, identifying colours and shapes, memory games, fine motor coordination, hand-eye coordination, concentration and broader goals such as social skills through explaining what they have built.
The Rooiels Outreach Trust is very grateful to Care for Education for their continued involvement as we roll out this project to additional schools in the Overstrand area.
