This year the Rooiels Outreach celebrated Mandela Day on Friday, 17 July. The day started early with Wolfgang and Wimpie Stals handing out 10kg bags of mieliemeal to 55 unemployed men, who congregate along Kleinmond’s main road in the hope of finding some kind of work, either for the day or longer. Judging from the grateful smiles and “Thank you’s”, it was obvious that this unexpected gift brought some much needed relief to many families in the area. Wolfgang and Wimpie then visited the kitchen staff at the local Hangklip Community Care Centre, who cook and supply wholesome meals for distribution in the Betty’s Bay / Hangklip area, spoiling them with his delicious coffee laced with condensed milk and cookies.
The Outreach had also sponsored ingredients for soup, as well as fresh bread, to be handed out to children and adults in the Overhills community on Mandela Day. Fresh vegetable ingredients for the soup were donated by Andries Brink, our most generous Rooiels resident, who donates vegetables regularly towards various Outreach initiatives. as The soup was prepared by a number of volunteers, and approximately 450 cups of soup, with a couple of slices of bread, were dished out that morning.
Another Mandela day project was handing out of beautiful new fleece blankets to the Bambanani Creche in Proteadorp, which falls under the administration of Kleinmond Child Welfare. The little kids and the friendly principal were thrilled with the donation, and the little ones were all snuggled up in their new blankets at nap time!
