Food scarcity in the community: the Food Sock Project

As an outreach for the community, we attempt to address at least a fraction of the ongoing food scarcity crisis in our own backyard in the Overhills / Proteadorp communities of Kleinmond. For the past two years, we have been supporting single- and child headed households, mostly women with one or more children, with our Food Voucher project. This system has been not entirely satisfactory, as the level of ensuring children were actually fed was largely out of our control.

We have now adopted another model of supporting hunger in these communities. Since March 2026, we have been distributing a great new product called The Food Sock. Please visit their website for more information on this product at www.foodsock.co.za

As before, we are working with and through the Kleinmond Child Welfare office, who are best placed in the community to identify the neediest families. The Food Sock is a foil bag containing a wholesome soya-based meal, which only needs to be cooked up with water and can feed 4 adults or 6 to 8 children. We have identified four popular flavours, and each household receives a bag with 4 – 6 Food Socks. Every month eight different families receive these parcels, as identified by the local social workers. We are very aware that this is just a drop in the ocean of food scarcity, but every drop does make a difference.
