The Overhills Food Voucher Project: September 2024 to March 2025

After experiencing first-hand the dire poverty, and desperate need of some families who are living in the Kleinmond Overhills informal settlement area, the Rooiels Outreach Trust identified the urgent need for food support to these families, many of which are single mothers with vulnerable children. An appeal was launched to the Rooiels Community for financial support for this project, with great success.

One of our objectives in supporting local communities is to maintain as much human dignity as possible, while helping those in need. With this objective in mind, it was decided to provide Shoprite food vouchers, rather than parcels with specific items. This ensures that each recipient can determine their own family’s needs. The Shoprite supermarket in Kleinmond is easily accessible from Overhills.

The recipients are identified by the Kleinmond Child Welfare social workers, who have their fingers on the pulse and needs of the local community, with a view to spreading the assistance as widely and fairly as possible. Up to now we have been able to support eight different families every month since September.

If you are keen to join us with this worthwhile project, please use your name and “Overhills food” as a reference when making a deposit.
