Food parcels for job seekers
With Cape winter storms having lashed our area, bringing driving rain and freezing winds, the decision to make a difference in our community was an easy one for the Outreach.
The first project was to help several itinerant job seekers in the Kleinmond area with some provisions, as part of the Mandela Day 67 minutes initiative.
The delivery of goods was first planned to happen on Mandela Day, Thursday 18th July. But then the weather forecast changed, and rain was predicted for that day, so we decided to do it on the next day, Friday instead. And then the unprecedented weather conditions changed our plans again, with more rain scheduled on Friday as well.
But we were not to be deterred, and quickly got our act together, ordered bread and food items for the parcels from our amazing Rooiels shop, whose owner, Wimpie Stoltz, is a staunch supporter of the Rooiels Outreach.
On Wednesday morning we got together early to pack some 48 parcels, which were then taken to Kleinmond. As usual, the job seekers were out on the side of the road in full force, huddled in jackets and coats, trying to stay warm in the freezing wind. When the bakkie pulled up to the groups, surprise was written all over the workers’ faces, as Ivan and Wolfgang began to hand out parcels containing wholesome food and some treats. The surprised looks swiftly changed to happy smiles with the promise of a decent meal for at least one day!
