Rooiels Outreach Trust

About Us

Rooiels residents who love working with the community, focusing on the health and wellbeing of underprivileged women and young girls, as well as the elderly.

Our Vision

We focus on the education and upliftment of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in our community, especially underprivileged children, women and the elderly. The Trust operates in Rooiels and includes communities in Ward 10 and surrounds, as well as the greater Kogelberg Biosphere geographical region.

We do additional disaster relief work, such as helping vulnerable members of the community if they fall victim to floods and fires. Sporting activities are also considered for our support, if they lead to uplifting and improving the lives of the underprivileged in our area.

Fiona Christelis
As Chair of the Rooiels Outreach Trust, I love working with the community. My passion is health care, primarily the health and well-being of women and young girls.

Originally from Johannesburg, I obtained a Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography and a postgraduate Diploma in Mammography. I worked as a radiographer in the public and private sector for 25 years. Following my radiography career, I spent 10 years establishing and running a 20 bed sub-acute facility (a step-down medical care facility for patients recovering from acute illness, operations or injury).

After I retired, I moved permanently to Rooiels in 2019 (I have owned a holiday home here since 1997).

When the Rooiels Outreach was formed in 2020, during the time of Covid, I was one of the founding members.

I grew up in Namibia, and moved to South Africa to study Physical Education at the University in Potchefstroom.

My career spanned 8 years at SASOL and 26 years in the SA National Defence Force.

We have had a holiday home in Rooiels since 2001, and retired here in 2010.

I am the Treasurer of the Rooiels Outreach Trust and have enjoyed working with the trust for the past 4 years.

I grew up in Pietermaritzburg and moved to Cape Town in 1982. For 34 years, my career was in the Petroleum Industry.

My wife and I had a holiday home in Rooiels, and moved here permanently in 2019. We share an art studio and a love of the outdoors.

I am very privileged to be a Trustee of the Rooiels Outreach Trust. Having worked with many children of varying ages, from all walks of life...

I believe that early childhood development, education and upliftment of the vulnerable, poor and previously disadvantaged members of our community are vitally important.

I was born in Germany, educated in Johannesburg, and was privileged to live in the Kruger National Park for 10 years. I then went on to own and manage a youth camp and guest house facility in Mpumalanga for 20 years.

I have been resident in Rooiels for six years, and love living in this caring and engaged community.

I am a Trustee of the Rooiels Outreach Trust. As I have always had a soft spot for the natural beauty of the Garden Route, Rooiels...

...which is close to Cape Town and was a natural choice to call home.

I was born in Mossel Bay, did a BA Honours in Development Studies at Stellenbosch University, and have been working in the construction industry for more than 25 years.

I am actively involved in various conservation initiatives, promoting eco-friendly development and biodiversity to ensure sustainable land use. This involves making sure land, water, biodiversity and other environmental resources are fairly distributed between competing claims, in order to secure human needs now and in the future.

Creating conservancies to protect nature has to go hand in hand with the creation of meaningful jobs and the eradication of absolute poverty. I strongly believe life is all about balance. This is what biodiversity really requires, and what the Unesco Sustainable Development Goals are truly about.

The Rooiels Outreach Trust does important work to help maintain this special balance in our region.

I have been working at UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) for over 10 years, in South Africa and internationally.

I’m currently based in Johannesburg, but have a home in Rooiels and serve as a Trustee of the Rooiels Outreach.

Whilst my career involves financial and programmatic monitoring of UNICEF-funded projects, my personal passion is promoting early childhood development in communities.
